Substance abuse is a broad term that refers to the misuse of various drugs and other substances. It is possible to abuse many different substances, including prescription medications, alcohol, illicit drugs, and even inhalants such as glue or nitrous oxide. Regardless of which substance a person abuses, repeated use has the potential to wreak havoc in a person’s life and may even lead to the development of a substance use disorder unless professional care at an addiction rehab or treatment center is sought.
At The Rose of Newport Beach, we believe that overcoming a substance use disorder should be a battle no woman fights alone. Since we first opened the doors at our addiction rehab and treatment center, our multidisciplinary team has provided quality care for women with substance use disorders. We are committed to the goal of giving each woman who comes for addiction treatment and rehabilitation at our center the best possible chance to live a substance-free life.
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Addiction Treatment
One universal truth about addiction and substance use disorders is that, regardless of the substance being abused, it can be incredibly difficult to watch a loved one struggle with them. As overwhelming and difficult as this can be, however, there are still a number of steps you can take to help your loved one in her battle against substance abuse and addiction. Consider the following:
- Research your loved one’s substance or substances of choice. Different substances will have different effects on a person, so it can be helpful to learn about the effects of substance abuse. Consulting reputable websites and talking with treatment professionals at addiction rehab centers may help you build your knowledge.
- Seek out options for treatment and rehabilitation at a professional center for addiction. Make a list of a few treatment centers that may be a good fit for your loved one.
- Try your best to keep lines of communication open with your loved one. Her substance abuse has probably caused stress in your relationship, but it is important to remember that she is in crisis and likely needs your help. Share your observations and concerns with her, but try your best to do so in a patient, kind, and nonjudgmental manner. Your loved one may not like what you have to say, so be prepared to handle pushback without allowing the conversation to become an argument.
- Should your loved one decide to enter treatment or rehab at a center for her addiction, do your best to help ease her transition. It may be helpful for you to contact the treatment center and set up any intake appointments she may need. You might also consider accompanying her to those appointments if she wishes you to. Once she is in treatment for her addiction at her chosen rehab center, make sure to continue supporting her with calls, notes, and letters as appropriate.
- Remember to take care of yourself. It can be draining to take care of a loved one with a substance use disorder, so make sure to lean on your support network of family and friends. In addition, keep up with basic healthy behaviors such as eating well, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. You might also consider joining a support group for people whose loved ones are struggling with substance use disorders.
Why Consider Treatment at The Rose of Newport Beach
Substances use disorders and addiction are often persistent and incredibly damaging to a person’s ability to function well in everyday life. Though different substances will have different effects, most substance use disorders can cause strain on one’s relationships, possibly leading to divorce, separation, or even social isolation. A person’s work performance is also likely to fall victim to substance abuse and addiction, possibly leading to job loss and financial difficulty. Substance abuse also affects a person’s mind and body, potentially causing memory difficulties, poor judgment, cognitive decline, organ damage, disease, and sometimes even death due to accidental or intentional overdose. While substance use disorders and addiction can have disastrous consequences, seeking effective treatment at a comprehensive substance abuse rehab center can protect a person from experiencing many of these negative effects.

The following are among the variety of treatment and rehab methods that are often included into our clients’ individualized treatment plans at our substance abuse center in order to fully treat each woman’s mind, body, and spirit when recovering from an addiction to substances:
Medical detoxification: Cleansing one’s body of the harmful substances upon which one has become dependent is often the first step in the recovery process. For those who require this service, The Rose facilitates medical detox. Once the detoxification process is complete, clients are welcome to begin the therapeutic aspect of their recovery.
Medication management: Clients of The Rose can expect to receive an initial psychiatric assessment within 72 hours of their arrival at our center. During this assessment, our onsite psychiatrist can determine if there is a need for medication to treat any co-occurring mental health concerns. Should a client require medication, our nursing staff and doctors are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to monitor the safety and effectiveness of any medication that is prescribed.
Individual therapy: Women who are receiving treatment and rehab at The Rose of Newport Beach partake in individual therapy sessions twice per week. Our licensed marriage and family therapists and certified EMDR therapists lead these sessions, which allow clients to process their thoughts, feelings, and emotions in a personal and confidential environment.
Group therapy: There is much to be gained when women are able to find support and encouragement from others who truly know what it is like to battle addiction. For this reason, The Rose offers group therapy opportunities at our treatment center for six hours each day. During these sessions clients who are recovering from addictions to substances will discuss and learn about the following topics:
- Family systems
- Sex and love
- Grief and loss
- Relapse prevention
Experiential therapy: Keeping true to our mission of providing truly holistic care, The Rose offers a variety of therapeutic options that help women heal in mind, body, and spirit. The following experiential therapies are offered at our center and are available to all who choose to heal with us:

Family therapy: We understand that many of the important relationships in our clients’ lives have been impacted by their addictions, and we strive to heal those relationships while women receive treatment at our center. Each week, our staff facilitates a phone call with each client’s loved ones so that healing and recovery can occur among those in our clients’ primary support networks. Furthermore, we are proud to offer a monthly Family Program that allows the family members and friends of our clients to partake in the following activities over the course of two and a half days:
